This past week I dove in even deeper and managed to trigger within myself the same level of disgust I’d experienced late last year. This time, however, I decided to find out exactly what was driving that emotion of disgust, and I think I found it, at least for me.

It is, for lack of a better term, the “oh-ain’t-it-awful” form of reporting.

It doesn’t matter if the talking heads making the report are liberal or conservative or whatever, the formula is basically the same; talk about a given subject/target, go into great detail how and why it’s awful, and finish up with an advertisement for something related to the channel. Lather, rinse, repeat.

And the YouTube algorithms know that’s what drives “engagement” and from there, advertising dollars.

As an experiment this last pass into YouTube, I started to mark what YouTube was trying to hand off to me with either a not interested or else don’t recommend this channel. I’m not sure what the not interested flag is supposed to do because I kept getting videos with the same subject matter, but on different channels. Even marking a channel not recommend still didn’t stop it completely, and I believe the answer to both questions of why is because there are a lot of people/bots out there grabbing other channel content and reposting it as their own. It becomes an exhausting whack-a-mole effort, which is what has driven me out of YouTube yet again.

Part of this flood of writing is traceable to a personal decision I made around Christmas that I would write about anything that crossed my consciousness horizon. Anything, especially if I experienced it. In the past I’ve been far too selective about subject matter, but not anymore. I think it’s finally sunk in that anything can be the subject of a post or story if you let it. By stopping myself from being so “picky” the floodgates have opened for me.

I’m sure a lot of this will read like crap. So be it. I’d rather it be human-generated crap than AI generated crap. I guess in a way this burst of writing creativity is my response to the AI LLM’s ability to create seemingly human-written content. I suppose if you read enough original written content and then have your machines mine steal that content from the entire internet for “training content,” that the AI software will regurgitate writing that seems plausible at first glance.

That’s not for me. If there are mistakes in my writing, they’re mine and mine alone. Bad prose, misspellings, grammar errors, syntax errors, too many commas, whatever. It’s all me and all mine. And that’s the way it should be.

I tried to use the latest darling browser, Vivaldi, to write this post but when I went to the WordPress site and tried to log into my blog account, I got the following bizarre screen:

Whatever is happening, WordPress’ login thinks I’m from somewhere else besides Orlando, Florida. I have no idea what language that is. This isn’t the first time that Vivaldi on my iPad has been identified as an unsupported browser, which kinda warps my mind a bit as this is the third decade of the 21st century and we’re supposed to have left this kind of nonsense behind over 20 years ago with the rise of Mozilla/Phoenix/Firefox and the long overdue death of Internet Explorer 6. But I suppose that whatever Vivaldi is spitting out as an identifier to WordPress’ login page is so alien it can’t handle it. Instead, I fell back to using Apple’s Safari browser, which isn’t bad at all. In spite of what Safari’s legion of vociferous critics may say Apple has invested a lot of quality effort into making mobile Safari the best mobile browser on the iOS platform (and yes, in spite of the name change, ipadOS is still iOS).

What’s even stranger is how WordPress the company has replaced its mobile application with a newer application, Jetpack. As of this point in time I have absolutely no use for Jetpack. The one feature the older WordPress app had, the ability to create and edit posts, is conspicuously absent. Oh, you can click on an entry and pop into an editor to edit an existing post, but the ability to create from new is gone. Furthermore, when you do pop into an editor, it’s that block-based editor that WordPress has attempted to foist on us for years. In spite of WordPress’ warnings it would remove the classic editor, it’s still there for old curmudgeons like me to continue to use.

I suppose I’ll just have to muddle along with the old ways of writing posts. I doubt, however, that I’ll ever need to fret about having a decent tool to write creatively. If and when WordPress ever does get around to finally killing the old classic editor, I’ll either learn to get along with the new stuff because it’s been polished a bit more to make it easier to work with, or else I’ll find yet another tool and go back to the setup I tried years ago with Ulysses. There is the new kid on the block, Obsidian…

Correction/Update

See that round gray circle with the white plus in it, down at the bottom on the lower left? Yeah, that one. That’s the control for creating a new entry. I “discovered” that feature just moments ago. I still won’t use it because it throws me into the block editor which I just do not want. And I did look around a bit to see if I could configure which editor to use, but I didn’t expect to find such a feature, and I didn’t. I’m still sticking with the web-based WordPress dashboard and its classic editor.

On the last Monday of November, I drove my wife down to Ft. Lauderdale, Fl, to see a specialist. The trip was successful for my wife.

I parked behind the medical building that was my wife’s destination next to its back entrance. As I exited my car I happened to notice the cat shelter that one or more employees in the building had placed on the back entrance. The shelter provides a way for a cat to get in from the rain. Along with the shelter the staff put out bowls of food and water.

I was really touched by seeing this, as I’d never seen anything like that before, especially up where I live in Orlando. A little humorous touch was the guard cat on duty sign behind to the right and just above the cat shelter, on the inside glass.

When I see something like this, it makes me feel a sense of hope that maybe the human race isn’t such a sadistic species after all.

The first exception has to do with stories that include any video content, such as movie trailers or any news reporting. You’re reading the story and embedded right in the middle is an embedded YouTube video that you need to click in order to view it. In the beginning I did click through, but over the month of November I trained myself not to. Now if I’m reading a piece of news and a YouTube-hosted video is part of that news, I skip the video portion.

The big exception has to do with training videos. Right now I’m re-training myself to use Blender 4.0.1. If you go back to the beginning of my blog you’ll see I wrote a number of posts about learning how to use a much earlier version, and how I managed to gain a foothold in understanding Blender basics and turning out simple but effective 3-D illustrations. Like a lot of things in that period I let my attention wander away rather than sticking to it. Now I’m trying almost ten years later to pick Blender back up again, but a lot has changed, especially the controls. I tried to use the old training videos from that earlier period but Blender 4’s controls have changed too much for me to use those old videos with the current Blender. So now I’m going through the learning process again, but this time with training videos on YouTube written for Blender 4.

The lesson here is that I can’t completely drop YouTube, but I can sure come close to it. I’ve cut down my viewing of YouTube to the point where I no longer let it affect me, and addict me, via its algorithmic charms. I’m using YouTube as it was originally conceived, as a way for the general user to present information to others via short and informative, and above all truthful, videos.

There are problems with this sidewalk which required they be dug up and re-poured. Instead they painted yellow caution stripes around the problematic areas and called it a day. If these are temporary, they’ve been down a while now as evidenced by the environmental staining from rain and being outdoors in general.

These are sidewalks that are used by both healthy walkers as well as people with handicaps. My wife is in the later category. I always go with her now to help her navigate problems such as these. What I find disturbing is that this is next to a multi-story doctor’s complex, which is next door to a major hospital. How they’re able to get away with something this lazy, and why they can’t find the funds to perform a proper repair, is beyond my understanding.

I agree with him on every point in his blog post. There’s nothing more for me to add. Except to say I agree with Marc 100% and as a consequence I’ve signed out of YouTube and will never sign back in, even after November ends.

I’m sure this sign has been up on this light pole for some time now, and as I looked around I saw what appeared to be others just like it scattered around. The problem is the sign is way up high and very few are placed elsewhere in the parking lot. If Publix wanted to make sure the message really got out to patrons coming into the store, then it should be more at eye level, and it should be on every pole. But since the signs are provided by a realty company, I’m sure the realty company had a hard limit on how much they wanted to spend, at least in this parking lot.

The fact that you have to put signs up like this is another sad comment on the current state of humanity. What makes it worse is that the people who would read such a sign and understand it would have already followed its basic premise. Those who are dumb enough to leave children or pets unattended in vehicle would neither care nor could then even understand it if they could read.

And I’m not shilling for the realty company.

The Wikipedia link is an excellent history of the use of woke going back to African American usage around the start of the twentieth century. It basically took 100 years for White folks to “wake up” to what Blacks had been horrifically suffering from for centuries in America.

Reports are now appearing on all the major news services that “scores” of remaining Twitter employees have rejected the Muskrat’s ultimatum to sign up for “hard-core” work or else resign and take three months of severance. It appears as if the majority of the remaining employees are cashing out. A number of sources are saying that as of this point, up to 88% of the initial employees that were working at Twitter when Muskrat first took over have been fired or left on their on. According to my calculator, 88% of 7,500 is 6,600, leaving a skeleton crew of just 900.

I’m sure that there are a lot of arm chair engineers out there that think that Twitter should be just fine with 900. Which would be true if you kept the most valuable 900. But you can’t cut loose 6,600 employees (in addition to some 5,000 contractors) and not loose a lot of institutional knowledge. The most valuable asset in any company, especially a knowledge-based company which includes Twitter, are all the employees who come to work every day.

To add insult to injury, Twitter management (whomever that may be now) has locked out all employees by disabling their key cards. That lockout will continue until next Monday. Lord help ’em if something should happen at Twitter before they open up on Monday. Now that the Muskrat has pulled this lockout stunt, I wonder how many more who were ambivalent will decide to pull the magic parachute ripcord and cash out themselves.

Not only has the Muskrat burned down a social media company, he’s pretty much set $44 billion on fire as well, as well as his personal reputation/”brand”. There will be those who blindly follow the Muskrat no matter what, but for the rest of us I think we see that the Muskrat king has no clothes.

I spent the last weeks of August off social media, including this blog. I needed to detox a bit from the fetid information stew swirling around the internet. What’s been stirring a good deal of this is the search warrant executed on Mar-A-Logo, Trump’s Florida residence.

I’ve spent the last twenty-plus years with a high clearance due to the type of work I did, and on occasion still do. I’ve been investigated regularly to keep that clearance because that’s the way a clearance works. They just don’t walk up to a stranger and hand out  clearances like free tickets to a movie. I’ve laid my life bare on multiple SF-86 documents because, again, that’s the way it works (and paid the price; my SF-86 information was part of the the OPM cyber breach of 2015 ( https://www.opm.gov/cybersecurity/cybersecurity-incidents ). I know the rules and what document clearance covers look like. You go through yearly security training to refresh that knowledge and to learn of any changes, and those training classes are also logged. Fail to take your training and you lose your clearance. That information was always locked in a SCIF or locked in a heavy upright safe inside a secure area. If I needed that information, and if I was cleared to see it, then it was logged when I received it and locked back up at the end of my shift. Leave out any secured documents and again you lose your clearance. There is too much at stake to treat such sensitive information lackadaisically.

When I viewed the photo of what the FBI found at Mar-A-Logo the first thought to cross my mind was how Trump wasn’t in jail, followed by the thought that if I’d done anything close to that I’d be in handcuffs on the way to jail.

Trump is a traitor to this country. Any defense of Trump on the specific crimes of the miss-handling of classified documents and the obstruction of trying to recover those documents, should be a litmus test of finding other traitors to this country. And right now, based on what I’ve seen and read in the news, those traitors are legion.

Twitter is long past redemption, having become a cesspool of toxic trolling and millions of bots, in spite of what Twitter leadership has said in the past, and continues to say. I find their assertion that they delete a million fake accounts per day on the platform as eye wateringly unbelievable. One million per day. Left unsaid is how many actually get through. No, I don’t believe that it’s only 5%.

While I still have a very small Twitter account, I’ve stopped checking on a regular basis (regular being once/week or so for me) because Twitter decided to send me a notification every time any of the accounts I followed sent out a tweet. I got flooded with those damn notifications. I tried in vain to slow it down with checking not interested, not interested… But it seemed to do no good. Now it looks like I’m no longer getting those notifications, which means that either the “training” finally worked, or somebody finally said turn off that feature. Another feature that drove me up the wall was when they wanted to become more Facebook-like by having the stories in my feed show up based on how popular they were, not in chronological order. Yes, I could set it back to chronological if I looked for the tiny little stars on the right corner of my feed (so logical!), except that when I went back it was reset to most popular. After a period of time it looked like it finally stuck to chronological.

Both of those changes were meant to “enhance engagement,” which was a way to try to hook you ever deeper into Twitter. There were other changes such as having suggestions of who else to follow pop up in my timeline. No thanks, those suggestions are based not on relevance so much as how controversial, which is just another way to stir up the masses. Every time one of those pops up I always click “not interested.” If I want to follow someone on Twitter I’ll go find them myself.

So let Twitter die. It absolutely should. As for the Muskrat, let him take the absolute maximum monetary hit legally possible. He also needs to eat as much crow as possible. Let his failure to follow through purchasing Twitter be an absolute feast of Twitter crow.

It goes without saying that the January 6 committee has finally, devastatingly, and with small enough words that even the Magats can understand, shown without doubt Trump was responsible, and more damningly, he knew every step of the way he was lying. As a side note, Liz Cheney is a Cheney, daughter of Dick Cheney. Like her daddy she has a steel backbone and knows no fear. And like her daddy, you mess with her and you get a face full of (metaphorical) buckshot.

Cryptocurrencies are the latest Ponzi scheme. In case you haven’t paid attention this week, the value (in US dollars!) have plunged dramatically and still continue to drop and drop… Crypto hedge fund Three Arrows failed to meet its margin calls. That triggered Finblox to impose a US$1,500/month withdrawal limit. And the biggest and latest failure is Celsius, a major crypto financial services company, blocked all withdrawals from crypto funds. Celsius is for big “institutional” investors, which has attracted the unwanted attention of state security regulators in Alabama, Kentucky, New Jersey, Texas and Washington. Which should be of concern for those 401(k) funds that “diversified” into crytocurrencies.

We all raised a big stink with the Trump administration when journalist Jamal Khashoggi was brutally assassinated at the behest of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman inside the Saudi consulate in Instanbul in 2018. The Biden administration pretty much pushed him and Saudi Arabia off to the side when he came into office. Until now. The rising cost of gasoline due to the illegal Russian invasion of Ukraine has put the entire oil market into chaos, and if there’s anything that oil market investors love, it’s chaos because the price of oil always goes up. I suppose Biden is trying to get the Saudis to increase production to help bring down the cost of crude, but I don’t think the Saudis have excess production, and if they did, why should they? They benefit from these high prices as well. I hope Biden comes away with something positive from this trip, but at this point, all this trip does is show him (and America) as weak. Just remember, we got here because of four years of Trumpism.

This pretty much sums up how Fox looks at the horrors of January 6th. Which is to say they don’t see anything wrong in Trump’s attempted coup. Trump even threw Ivanka under the bus when she testified she believed Bill Barr’s assessment that the claim the 2020 presidential election was rigged was “bullshit.” In the process of throwing Ivanka under the bus, he also threw Bill Barr ( https://www.nytimes.com/2022/06/10/us/politics/trump-ivanka-january-6-hearing.html ).

I’m still dealing with the aftermath of Buffalo and Uvalde. I’m not forgetting. Neither should you.

These are on the front of my refrigerator at eye level. My wife got them for herself, but I’m not blind (just nearly so without glasses). I quickly glance at them every morning and have since before I officially retired. In the beginning they didn’t affect me one way or the other. Over time, the months and the years, those words on that refrigerator door have gone from slogans that can be ignored to truths that can no longer be ignored. I can’t be silent and fade into the dark end of life. I’ve seen too many injustices and social sins committed since 2016 (and quite a few before then, to be honest, but I chose to be a part of the Silent Majority). I thought everything wrong would magically straighten itself out after 2020, but we know how that’s worked out. And now it looks like the beasts are trying to rise again.

The slogan at the top of this blog is “Cats, Computers, Cameras & Commentary.” I’ve certainly delivered on the first three, only occasionally on the fourth. That mix is about to change. I’m about to inject more commentary more often, heavy on the more. After all it’s my blog and I’ll write what I want to, write what I want to… Sorry, I started channeling Lesley Gore for a minute. I hope I don’t run my regular readers off, but the subjects of my commentaries will be serious (although I hope I can inject a little humor to keep it from being deadly serious).

Here’s to change for the better.

Fedora 36 Final arrived late morning eastern standard time today, and I downloaded its ISO and installed it in a Parallels virtual machine. No issues at all installing it, and it quickly and easily configured. Two technical issues:

1. Wayland still doesn’t work properly in a virtual machine on my MacBook Pro running macOS Monterey 12.3.1. I switched to regular old reliable Xorg at the login screen.
2. I tried to build Parallels Tools and it failed to build and install. Specifically, the kernel driver it builds and installs failed to build. I’d hoped it would work because it worked for Fedora 35, which has the same kernel version, 5.17. But I guess not. I won’t even speculate why it’s broken, but it’s traceable to changes in the kernel sources. I’m sure that in fairly short order an update to Tools will arrive and it’ll build.

Those are VM issues, and not a concern for installing on bare hardware. I am, however, shocked, shocked I tell you, to find an example of someone else’s prudish sensibilities intruding into a distribution I’m seriously considering. See here in the Software application:

It’s called Parental Controls, it has a rating of 1.4 stars, and it deserves every down vote cast against it.

Since when did we need to have parental controls in the middle of a Linux distribution? If you want parental controls you can get plenty of that and more with Microsoft Windows. Have at it. If I wanted to stick Linux in front of a kid, I’d buy them a Chromebook. I have no idea who thought this was a Good Idea, but once again, they should be ejected from whatever specially committee they’re on, that committee in turn should be shut down, and this crap should be removed. I’m not even going to wait for someone to make it removable. I mean the purpose is for adult Linux users to impose their will on their children in such as blunt way? I’m not going to “control restrictions, control how long they can use the computer for, what software they can install, and what installed software they can run.” Fuck all of that. This may come as a shock to many, but the purpose of a parent is to be a parent, which means you devote whatever time and energy is necessary to be a good parent. You don’t buy them tech and then let the tech handle them. This is just utter bullshit. And yes, I checked, and it’s there on Fedora 35 at least. The party or parties responsible for this travesty even wrote in the release notes how they had to make the app uninstallable so that it wouldn’t remove “core desktop components,” which means it broke the graphical desktop. Reminds me of the brltty debacle with Pop!_OS.

Yeah. I thought I was going to install Fedora 36 in place of Pop!_OS, but that probably won’t happen. I’m now looking to choose between Ubuntu and Linux Mint. I know exactly what I’m getting with Ubuntu, whethere I stay with LTS or ride along with their six month releases. When I demand freedom in my operating system, I want it all. I don’t want to see any of this nanny-ware crap anywhere, I don’t care how widely your latest release is lauded.

It’s a good thing we still have choice.

When the third season started I eagerly tuned into the first episode, Spock’s Brain. That episode turned out so bad it turned me off of The Original Series. I have never watched a single complete episode of season 3, not even in reruns. Why was Spock’s Brain so bad? Mid-episode, Bones beamed down to the surface of a planet with a brainless Spock in tow. Bones had attached a device (prop) to Spock’s head, and had a control box (another prop) in his hand to help control brainless Spock. When he pressed a button on the hand-held prop to “control” the brainless Spock, a mechanical clockwork-like clicking sound could be heard coming out of the T.V. I couldn’t believe it. Here was a technologically advanced culture portrayed as using a mechanical clicking sound to convey the brainless character Spock moving and walking. I suddenly realized I could have written everything up to this point better than what I was watching, at which point I turned off the show, and the T.V. itself.

At that moment in my young life a basic rule was born. If a science fiction movie or a television show looked like something I would write, then it wasn’t worth finishing. Because believe me when I say I couldn’t write a lick of decent science fiction you’d want to read if my very life depended on it. But I do have enough good taste to recognize good science fiction when I read or see it.

Television shows are easy to boot to the curb as they are part of your basic streaming/cable service. Movies, especially first run shows in theaters, are tougher to walk out on because of the expense of seeing them (but I have for a few). That’s why I don’t go to very many any more, and haven’t since at least 2017. The pandemic just reinforced my abandonment of theater movies.

I attended the first Star Trek movie and managed to sit through the entire production, but I’ve never since watched it again. The second movie, The Wrath Of Khan, is the only movie I truly enjoyed and the only movie I have watched more than once. I watched The Search for Spock, leaving less than satisfied. I left in the middle of The Voyage Home and never went back to watch another one of the original cast films.

As for The Next Generation I pretty much gave up on it after watching a few of the first season episodes, with one notable exception. Guest star John de Lancie added considerably to every episode he appeared in as the character ‘Q’. I tried to watch those episodes he appeared in. He is a treat to watch. It’s a shame he was never made a starship captain.

I essentially skipped Deep Space 9 and Voyager. I managed to watch a bit of Enterprise, stopping during the Xindi story arc and never going back. As for the modern show Discovery, I absolutely can’t stand it. I assume it’s due to the fact it most certainly isn’t aimed at my age demographic, but still. Discovery (or DISCO to its admiring fans, which says a lot there) started its existence racing off the proverbial cliff with a fungus-powerd starship warpdrive. Fake dilithium crystals were bad enough, but a fungus? Really?

Then there’s Picard. I came by that show through Apple TV+, and I came by Apple TV+ because I purchased my iPhone 11 back in late 2019 before I retired. Apple was handing out free twelve month subscriptions with the purchase of new expensive Apple gear. When I finally redeemed my free subscription in December 2019 it lasted pretty much through 2020. Along with Apple TV+ came a free 30-day subscription to Paramount’s streaming service, so I used that to watch the first season of Picard. By the time I was done I’d done something I hadn’t done since The Original Series; I’d watched most of an entire season of Star Trek. I wasn’t impressed and did not watch Picard season 2, nor will I watch season 3. It’s just not worth my time.

And what about the latest Paramount property, Strange New Worlds? I’m not going to bother. What little I’ve read on other news spots indicates it’s a retread of The Original Series’ first pilot, The Cage. New actors obviously, but Strange New Worlds has its real roots (and a number of its characters) from Discovery, and that’s enough to kill any interest.

If I dislike Star Trek so much, why even talk about it? Good question, and the answer is because I’m tired of seeing it constantly mentioned and written just about everywhere else on the web. Because I’d decided I’d finally had enough. Star Trek in the 1960s was something fun and a way for my friends and I to get excited by the future. Now Star Trek is just another way for Paramount to create a recurring revenue stream called Paramount+. Long gone are the days when I’d channel surf at 2am through the UHF stations until I found one playing an old TOS episode. Those easy days came to an end when it got pulled into Netflix along with everything else Netflix streamed. Now everything Star Trek has been gathered up into Paramount+, and you gotta pay them to watch. No thanks.

This is my first and last rant about Star Trek. It’s finally out of my system. Sorry to have bothered you.

I’m married and have two daughters. It enrages me that some other men can have the power and authority to decide what these women, or all other women, can do with their bodies. Their bodies are their own, and they have a fundamental right to do with them as they please, including determining if they carry a pregnancy to full term.

As a father I’ve watched my wife carry both our girls and then give birth. I’ve experienced the joy of new life coming into the world, and the joy of being their father. I’ve also experienced fear and anger due to poor medical help I’ve watched all three receive due to bad diagnoses, during both pregnancies, and while my girls were growing. I’ve seen the biases against women first hand through what all three have experienced.

What’s happening right now with Roe v. Wade is the ultimate example of minority rule. The rule of twisted, bigoted white conservative rule. Yeah, I’m also a white male, but that just makes me even sicker that my race and gender would do this to the three people I love more than any other.

I will do whatever it takes to reverse this. This will not, it cannot stand.
