I expect that attitude from Apple and Microsoft, especially Apple. But Apple’s internals are still Unix (real BSD), while Microsoft is based on DEC’s VMX. I had to deal with VMX professionally (i.e. as part of my job) and I came to hate it with a passion. The only way I could deal with VAXen back in the day is if they ran DEC’s Ultrix, which was BSD but with DEC’s IP replacing Berkeley’s.

But unfortunately that attitude has seeped into Linux developer teams, which is why we have Fedora’s parental controls that can’t be removed, and why I won’t use it as my daily driver, as well as other odd “features” that somebody thought would be a Good Idea (I’m looking at you systemd).

Even going back to FreeBSD is a waste of my time; FreeBSD has migrated so far from the original BSD I worked on back in the 1980s that I don’t see how they can still call it a BSD.

Why stick with Linux? It’s close enough and doesn’t get in my way. And there’s the old engineering saying: ‘Better’ is the enemy of ‘Good Enough’.
