“Picard” was very much the “milking-the-franchise” effort. Back at the start of the COVID lockdown, Paramount offered a free 30-day trial via Apple TV+, so I took it. I used the time to sample “Discovery” as well as watch all the episodes of “Picard” season 1. I couldn’t stand “Discovery” due to all its silliness.

I watched “Picard” up to the finale episode. It was pure fan service, with many TNG and “Voyager” and references and characters. Binging it helped to quickly run through the episodes, as was the ability to move forward over the sillier parts of all the episodes. When Data died (one more time!) in the season one finale, I felt that one season was enough. Unfortunately Paramount felt otherwise; when the next two seasons were released I was off of Paramount+ and never felt the need to go back to watch them.

This is probably the closest the latest Star Trek shows have come to the original “feel” of the original Star Trek. Of all the Trek content that’s been produced since 1960’s original series, I’ve only cared for some episodes of the original series first two seasons, and the movie “The Wrath of Khan.” I think I might now add “Strange New Worlds” to my very short list of acceptable Trek.

I will confess to watching Star Trek: Lower Decks though. Yes, the cartoon series that basically makes fun of all the impossible elements of ST and other sci-fi. Just because it is funny and I always need a laugh. The only time it fails is when it tries to be a ‘real’ ST series. Otherwise, to each their own.
