Forgot – only once or twice when a neighbour (10 years older than me) bought a new notebook and asked me to help her to set it up. Also, a friend from Wales, UK, is still using 8.1 on her “internet machine” as she calls it – and I didn’t warn or lecture her about any risks, although as a friend I probably should… as I’ve seen, final support for 8.1 will be dropped soon, so she’ll have to look for alternatives anyway.
As for Linux, SJVN thinks that Windows will one day be cloud only, so Linux and MacOS might be the only ones left: https://www.theregister.com/2022/10/14/year_of_linux_desktop/ – don’t know if that will be true soon, as there are many applications (like music in our case, which is near real time) which won’t play nicely with cloud services IMO. But since Linux is about everywhere (as in ChromeOS and so on), I don’t see it disappearing too soon. It might even be the gaming OS if Windows goes away (with Steam), but I’m no gamer, so my knowledge there is limited…
It may well be that the days of desktops are limited, but I’m not running Nextcloud in our home (together with HAproxy and Wireguard on the server for reverse DNS-lookups and tunnels) yet, this is still no stuff for the everyday average Joes (and I’m trying to forget my “IT knowledge”) :)
But yes, 8 (and 8.1) looked different, and nice, or so I thought as well.

I also miss netbooks. Wore out two of them. I suspect I couldn’t use one these days as even the 15 inch display is a bit tricky for me now.
