i’m on bluesky now

Bluesky account: @whb.bsky.social

My invitation code showed up Friday in an email on one of my seldom-used accounts. I didn’t read the email, and thus sign up, until today. I’ve an old (in existence nearly 25 years) email account I seldom check (average once/week). It’s the same email account I used for my former Twitter account, so I felt it proper to re-use it for Bluesky. So far not much to talk about. I have followed exactly two other Bluesky accounts, one of which is the official Bluesky account, @bsky.app.

Apparently a whole bunch more new accounts were created over the past few days as even more people flee Twitter. I found this message saying that they were having performance issues they needed to resolve rather interesting. Bluesky Social was founded in 2021, so after about three years I would have expected the code base would have been pretty solid by now. Not to be overly critical of Bluesky, mind you. After all, Twitter, which spun out Bluesky, has itself been close to financial ruin, technical collapse and social meltdown since its inception. It’s fragility and functional failures have only gotten (much) worse under Musk’s incompetent ownership. To be honest I have a much better experience under Mastodon. Now I’m also on Bluesky; I might as well stick around as a quiet observer if nothing else.

As a point of reference, it’s been over two months since I shut down my Twitter account.
